THIMUN Information
Participation Booklet
Delegate Preparation
Please ensure that every delegate comes to the conference with a prepared position speech for his/her committee. The speech should cover the delegate’s national policy on one or several of the four issues to be debated in their particular forum. The speech should be one minute in length. Speeches are the first activity on Wednesday, so please ensure that your delegate is adequately prepared. A solid, opening speech will be set the tone for your delegates, and for the entire conference.
Second, please ensure that every delegate comes to the conference with one completed resolution. This is essential for a successful lobbying experience. They should bring a print copy and an e-copy on a thumb-drive/USB memory stick.
The THIMUN Qatar website has numerous links that can assist with delegate preparation, including a new series of short videos produced by Best Delegate. These can be found at http://qatar.thimun.org/index.php/education/mun-materials
Delegates are encouraged to bring computers to the conference. The use of computers or other electronic devices are not allowed during debate. However, they can serve as important research tools during lobbying and breaks. QNCC offers free Wi-Fi throughout the facility.
Ambassador and Ambassador Speeches
Student Ambassadors are responsible for the conduct of their respective delegations. They are the student leader of the delegation and are expected to support the MUN Director in organizing their teams. They are the spokesperson for their country at the opening ceremonies and, if called upon, in the Security Council.
This year’s student ambassador speeches will be pre-selected. If your student ambassadors would like the opportunity to give a ONE minute speech at opening ceremonies, they will need to submit their speech by Tuesday, January 20th. Please have your ambassador submit the speech by email to [email protected].
Ambassadors who have been selected to give a speech during opening ceremonies will be contacted by email via their MUN Director.
Dress Code
MUN conferences require a professional dress code from all MUN participants including MUN directors and chaperones. Sloppy or an unkempt appearance is a form of disrespect to the represented country. Likewise, dress that is revealing or designed to attract attention violates the spirit of the MUN conference. MUN is a formal, conservative meeting place for discussion of serious issues; clothing should reflect this. National dress is not considered appropriate conference attire because delegates are embodying a different country than their own.
Asking delegates to leave the Convention Center is very disruptive and goes against our desire to provide the highest level of hospitality to our guests. However, participants that are not appropriately dressed, will be asked to change even if this requires them to return to their hotel or home.
Please communicate these instructions to your delegate. Written descriptions of proper dress code is in the administration handbook on page 15. A special note for female delegates: skirts/dresses must cover the knees at all times, including sitting.
Delegation Notepads
Delegates are afforded note passing privileges during committee sessions. Schools may make their own delegation stationary. The country name and flag, committee name, and/or an official seal or emblem are all appropriate items to put on official delegation stationary. Gimmicky, unprofessional or undiplomatic notepads will be confiscated by Admin staff. If you plan to use your own notepads, please print enough copies and bring those with you.
Registration Day: Tuesday, January 28th
Please remember that on Tuesday, February 3, one member of staff should report to the Convention Center to pick up their school’s registration materials. On February 4th, delegates must arrive at the Convention Center wearing their conference identification.
Only student officers and members of the press and tech teams need to be at the convention center on the 28th. ICJ members do not need to be present.
Digital Certificates
THIMUN Qatar, for the second year in a row, will be issuing digital certificates in addition to traditional paper ones. In order for delegates, student officers, Admin Staff, Press, ICJ (and even directors!) to receive these, individuals are asked to sign up via this link http://bit.ly/thimunqcertificate. We do not have a way to issue these certificates without students signing up for them in advance. Students need to provide first name, last name and their unique email address. Please ask your delegates to sign up for their certificate prior to their arrival in Doha.
Connecting Delegates via Facebook
In lieu of formal online forums, committee chairs have created Facebook groups for each committee. We would appreciate you sharing these links with your delegates.
